A recent study conducted by researchers at the University of Florida has found that kratom, a tropical tree native to Southeast Asia, may be effective in relieving opioid dependence.
“The study found that kratom was effective in reducing opioid withdrawal symptoms and cravings,” said lead author Dr. Jack Henningfield. “It also resulted in improved quality of life and overall well-being in the kratom group.”
Kratom, which is often consumed in the form of a tea, has long been used in traditional medicine for its analgesic and opioid-like effects. In recent years, it has gained popularity as a potential treatment for opioid addiction, with proponents claiming that it can help alleviate withdrawal symptoms and reduce cravings.
The study, which was published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), involved a small group of patients with a history of opioid use disorder who were seeking treatment at a substance abuse clinic. Half of the participants were given a daily dose of kratom tea, while the other half received a placebo.
While the study was small and further research is needed to confirm the findings, the results add to a growing body of evidence suggesting that kratom may be a viable option for individuals struggling with opioid addiction. However, it’s important to note that kratom is not without its own risks and should not be viewed as a replacement for evidence-based treatments such as medication-assisted therapy.
“This study is a step in the right direction, but more research is needed to fully understand the safety and effectiveness of kratom for the treatment of opioid addiction,” said Dr. Henningfield.
Despite the potential benefits of kratom, it remains a controversial substance, with some experts cautioning against its use due to a lack of long-term safety data. In addition, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued warnings about the potential for serious side effects, including respiratory depression and death.
